Details
Lattice patterns — intersecting diagonal lines building into a repeating diamond grid — turn up across Indian textiles, temple stonework, and folk painting in a way that suggests the pattern has been independently satisfying to people for a very long time. This pendant renders it at real scale: a large kite-shaped diamond of black clay, covered in a hand-painted gold-and-red lattice so fine it starts to resemble woven fabric rather than paint on clay.
The pendant hangs from a cord of alternating black and gold clay beads, and the earrings scale the same diamond shape down into steel-post studs — same black body, same lattice detail concentrated near the base. Having the earrings echo the pendant this precisely gives the whole set a put-together quality that’s harder to achieve when pieces are bought separately.
What’s actually impressive here is the density of the linework. Every intersecting line is painted by hand, which means the lattice on one pendant will never match another exactly — a level of variation that a printed or stamped pattern simply can’t produce. The kite-diamond shape itself photographs unusually well too, since the sharp point at the bottom draws the eye downward in a way a round or square pendant doesn’t, giving the whole piece a slightly more elongating effect when worn. Black as a base colour also does something practical for the lattice work — the gold and red sit brighter and read more clearly against it than they would against a lighter clay body, which is part of why this palette was chosen over a more traditional terracotta orange.
