Details
Vertical flutes run down the lower half of this cup, carved into the clay while it was still soft enough to shape but firm enough to hold a clean edge — a technique that takes a steady hand and a fair amount of practice to get even across the full circumference. Above the fluting, a few fine horizontal rings mark the transition to the rim, echoing the throwing lines left naturally by the wheel.
The body tapers gently from a narrower base to a wider mouth, a shape chosen for how it sits in the hand as much as how it looks — the flutes give your fingers something to rest against rather than a smooth, slippery surface, which makes the cup genuinely comfortable to hold through a full cup of hot coffee or tea. Left unglazed, the terracotta retains its full texture and porosity, keeping drinks naturally cool to the touch the way clay vessels have for generations.
The handle is pulled by hand and curved into a loop wide enough for a full grip, attached at the point where the fluted section meets the plain rim so the transition feels intentional rather than abrupt. The fluting itself draws on a decorative technique long used in Indian pottery, where texture is carved directly into the form rather than painted or glazed on top of it.
Since the fluting is carved individually into each cup by hand, the spacing and depth of the grooves differ slightly across pieces — a sign of hand craft, not inconsistency. Over time and repeated use, the exposed clay may darken subtly along the raised ridges of the flutes, a natural patina that only adds to the handmade character of the piece.
The fluted texture also makes this cup slightly easier to identify by touch alone, which some people appreciate when reaching for their regular cup among several similar-looking pieces in a cupboard. It's a small, practical benefit layered on top of what is primarily a decorative and tactile design choice.
