Details

The neck of this cup flares outward before curving back in toward the rim, a shape that takes more control at the wheel than a straight-sided cup and gives it a distinct silhouette on a shelf or table. Below the flare, a series of fine horizontal ribs circles the body — the natural mark left by the potter's fingers as the clay was shaped and thinned during throwing, rather than a texture added afterward.

Left completely unglazed, the cup keeps terracotta's natural porosity, which allows it to breathe and stay cool to the touch. This is the same principle that has made clay vessels a practical choice for hot drinks across generations — the material doesn't retain heat the way glass or ceramic does, so the cup itself stays comfortable to hold even right after pouring a fresh coffee or chai.

The handle is shaped separately and joined to the body by hand, curved to sit naturally under two or three fingers depending on grip size. It's positioned to balance the visual weight of the flared neck, so the cup doesn't feel top-heavy even when it's full. The overall shape gives it a slightly more formal, sculptural look compared to simpler barrel-shaped cups, while still remaining completely practical for daily use.

Because the flare and rib work are done freehand rather than with a mould, the exact proportions of the neck, the depth of the ribbing, and the final height shift slightly from one cup to the next. That's a detail that comes with genuinely handmade pottery rather than a factory-cast piece, and it means the cup you receive will carry small, individual marks unique to the potter who shaped it that day.

This shape also tends to sit well as part of a mixed set, since the flared neck gives it enough visual distinction to stand apart from simpler cylindrical or barrel-shaped cups without clashing. Whether used for a morning coffee routine or brought out for guests, it holds up well to frequent handling and only grows more characterful with regular use.

Size + Care

Size & Capacity

  • Height — 2.5 in
  • Width (Diameter) — 4 in

Note — Dimensions are approximate. Each piece is handmade — minor variations are a mark of authentic craft.

Care Instructions

  • First Use — Rinse thoroughly with clean water and let dry before first use. This removes any clay dust from firing.
  • Washing — Hand wash only with plain water or a mild, natural soap. Do not use harsh detergents — they clog the pores.
  • Drying — Air dry fully upside down after each wash. Do not seal when damp — this prevents odour buildup.
  • Avoid — Do not microwave · Do not put in dishwasher · Do not freeze · Do not drop on hard surfaces.

Tip — For unglazed pieces, occasional light seasoning with water helps maintain the clay's natural texture and finish.
