Details

Walk into most rooms and your eyes land on one of three things: a window, a person, or whatever’s occupying the biggest stretch of wall. This clock is built to win that last contest without trying too hard. Eleven inches of clay, shaped into a shallow disc, then cut by hand into a pinwheel of grooves that spiral outward from the centre. Four small rosette flowers stand in for numbers at the quarter-hour marks. Two plain black hands do the actual timekeeping. Nothing else competes for attention.

The carving happens before firing, while the clay still has give in it. Every groove gets cut at a matching depth and angle in a single confident pass — the kind of steadiness that only comes after an artisan has made this exact motion hundreds of times. Once fired, those grooves throw real shadow, not printed shading, so the piece genuinely looks different depending on when you glance at it: flatter under harsh midday light, deeper and more dramatic once the sun angles low in the evening.

Skipping numerals entirely was a deliberate call, not an oversight. The rosette markers do that job quietly, and the open pinwheel carving gets to stay uninterrupted across the whole face. It’s the kind of restraint that shows up when a maker trusts the form enough to leave it alone.

Scale-wise, this sits comfortably as a focal point rather than a filler piece — a dining wall, a home office, a studio corner that’s been asking for something with actual presence. It reads equally well against rough plaster and clean drywall, which is unusual for something this textured.

  • Surface — Hand-carved terracotta, unglazed, natural warm tone
  • Motif — Spiral pinwheel relief with rosette hour markers
  • Mechanism — Battery-run silent-sweep movement (1 AA cell)
  • Face style — No printed numerals — carving does the work
  • Suits — Dining rooms, studios, home offices, statement walls

A clock that changes with the light instead of just marking it.

Size + Care

Size & Dimensions

  • Across — 11 inches (27.9 cm)
  • Front-to-back — 4 inches (10.1 cm)

Note — No two pieces come out of the kiln quite alike — carving rhythm and clay tone shift slightly from one to the next, which is simply what happens when a human hand does the cutting instead of a machine.

Care Instructions

  • Mounting — Use a wall screw or hook rated for real weight — fired clay at this size isn’t light, and a flimsy fixture won’t hold it long-term.
  • Power — Pop in one AA battery to start the movement; swap it out once the hands stall.
  • Upkeep — A dry cloth handles dust fine. Skip water and any spray cleaner on the carved surface.
  • Steer clear of — Damp bathrooms, kitchens with heavy steam, and anywhere with standing humidity.
  • If it stops — Check the battery first before assuming anything’s actually broken — that’s the usual culprit.
