Details

The surface of this mug is carved to resemble a woven or basket-like texture — tight diagonal strokes running between two horizontal notch bands, one near the rim and one just above the base. It's a pattern that references handwoven basketry and matting traditions found across rural India, translated here into fired clay rather than natural fibre, which gives the mug an unexpected tactile quality for something made entirely of terracotta.

An amber glaze covers the rim and flows a short way down the body, catching the light differently across the raised and recessed parts of the carved texture. Below that, the mug tapers slightly toward a compact base, giving it a tall, upright profile that stands out next to rounder, barrel-shaped mugs in the same collection. The proportions make it comfortable for a full mug of coffee without feeling bulky or awkward in hand.

As with all carved terracotta pieces, the woven pattern is cut by hand into each mug individually rather than pressed from a mould, so the exact rhythm of the diagonal lines shifts slightly from one piece to the next. The amber glaze pools a little more heavily in some grooves than others during firing, which is a natural result of the glazing process rather than an inconsistency to correct.

This mug works equally well as a daily coffee mug or as a small decorative accent when it's not in use, since the woven texture reads clearly even from a distance. Because the carving and glaze application are both manual steps, each mug that comes out of this batch is genuinely distinct — no two will show the exact same glaze pooling or carving rhythm, which is part of what makes each one worth owning.

The warm amber tone of the glaze also pairs naturally with the earthy colour of the unglazed clay beneath it, giving the mug a cohesive, single-material look despite the two different finishes. It's a piece that photographs well in natural light, which is part of why it tends to stand out on a breakfast table or a styled kitchen shelf.

Care Instructions

  • First Use — Rinse thoroughly with clean water and let dry before first use. This removes any clay dust from firing.
  • Washing — Hand wash only with plain water or a mild, natural soap. Do not use harsh detergents — they clog the pores.
  • Drying — Air dry fully upside down after each wash. Do not seal when damp — this prevents odour buildup.
  • Avoid — Do not microwave · Do not put in dishwasher · Do not freeze · Do not drop on hard surfaces.

Tip — For unglazed pieces, occasional light seasoning with water helps maintain the clay's natural texture and finish.
