Terracotta Jhumka Earrings — Handcrafted Black, Gold & Green Clay Jhumkas

Ask most people to picture an Indian earring and there’s a decent chance the shape in their head is a jhumka — the domed, bell-like drop worn across every region and generation of Indian jewellery in one form or another. Clay is a genuinely new medium for it, though. These are hand-shaped into the classic triangular jhumka outline, then painted in black, burnished gold, orange, and a sharp green, finished with hand-rolled black beads along the bottom edge that swing with movement.

The upper section takes its visual cue from meenakari enamelwork — the layered, jewel-toned look metal jhumkas get from actual enamel, painted on here instead. Below it, a black-and-orange base carries a row of individually placed dots that lean folk-art rather than fine-jewellery, and the tension between the two registers is most of what makes these interesting to look at twice.

Being clay rather than metal changes how they actually wear. These sit noticeably lighter than a comparable brass or silver jhumka, which means the scale can go bolder than usual without your earlobe filing a complaint by the end of an evening. The bead drops along the base aren’t purely visual either — they’re what create that characteristic jhumka sway with even small head movements, the small physical detail that separates a genuine jhumka from anything just shaped like one. That movement is also part of why jhumkas have stayed a wedding and festival staple for so long — a static earring, however detailed, doesn’t hold attention the same way one that visibly moves with the wearer does.
