Details
Not every planter needs to be understated. Low-slung and round-bellied, with small rounded ears and a wide, gentle face resting close to the ground, this hand-shaped hippo carries a generous planting cavity across its back — turning a simple houseplant into a small scene rather than just a pot.
Every hippo is built entirely by hand by artisan potters in Udaipur, without moulds or casting. The rounded body, short stubby legs, and softly detailed face are shaped from raw terracotta clay, then air-dried before a slow, high-temperature kiln firing. Small variations in the curve of the belly or the set of the ears are normal — a quiet signature of the artisan who shaped that particular piece.
Beyond its charm, this is a fully functional terracotta planter: the material's natural porosity lets excess moisture escape gradually through the walls, encouraging healthier root aeration and helping to prevent waterlogging. This makes it a good home for compact trailing plants, small ferns, or other varieties that prefer their soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
Its low, grounded form makes it especially well suited to a windowsill, a low shelf, or a sunny spot on the floor where its shape can be fully appreciated from above.
