There was a time when curd didn’t come out of a plastic tub pulled from a refrigerator shelf — it came from a clay jar left overnight on a warm kitchen counter, covered with a simple square of cotton cloth, and by morning it had set thick, tangy, and genuinely alive in a way factory-produced yogurt has never quite managed to replicate. That version of curd isn’t nostalgia. With this jar, it’s simply tomorrow morning’s breakfast.

Clay isn’t a passive container in this process — it’s an active participant in the fermentation itself. Microscopic pores in the terracotta walls regulate temperature naturally, holding the gentle, consistent warmth that live starter cultures actually need to thrive, while simultaneously allowing a slow, controlled air exchange that creates exactly the right microenvironment for curd with a genuinely thick body and a clean, faintly earthy depth no steel bowl or plastic container comes close to producing. This isn’t sentiment — it’s centuries-old food science that happens to still hold up.

Every jar is hand-thrown on a traditional wheel by skilled potters in Rajasthan from 100% food-safe terracotta, sun-dried, and kiln-fired without any chemical glaze or synthetic coating added afterward. What touches your milk is pure clay and nothing else, which also means the finished curd stays free of the microplastics and chemical leaching associated with plastic or metal alternatives.

The method stays genuinely simple: warm your milk, stir in a starter culture, pour it into the jar, cover with cloth, and leave it somewhere warm overnight. What you wake up to is curd exactly the way it was originally meant to taste.

  • Material — Food-safe terracotta, chemical-free, BPA-free
  • Origin — Handcrafted by artisan potters in Rajasthan
  • Technique — Hand-thrown on a traditional wheel, kiln-fired without coatings
  • Good for — Setting curd/dahi, yogurt fermentation, buttermilk storage, sourdough starters

The curd your grandmother made, from the same kind of jar she made it in.

Size + Care

Size & Dimensions

  • Width — 7 inches (17.7 cm)
  • Height — 5.50 inches (13.9 cm)

Note — Dimensions are approximate — handmade, with minor variation in size and surface texture between jars.

Care Instructions

  • First use — Fill completely with clean water and let sit 24 hours before first use, then discard the water and air dry fully.
  • Setting curd — Warm milk to lukewarm (not boiling), stir in a starter, pour in, cover with cotton cloth, and leave overnight somewhere warm and draft-free.
  • Washing — Hand wash only, plain water or a very mild natural soap — harsh detergents clog the pores and affect flavour.
  • Drying — Air dry fully, upside down, after every use — never store sealed or damp.
  • Steer clear of — Microwave, dishwasher, refrigerating while setting curd, hard-surface drops.
  • Long-term care — Re-season with a water soak every few months to keep the pores performing well.
