Terracotta Diya Set of 6 — Handmade Natural Clay Diyas with Paisley Scroll Design
Details
A diya is a small open clay lamp that holds oil or ghee (clarified butter) and a cotton wick, and it is lit in Indian homes every evening and in large numbers at Diwali, the autumn festival of lights. The four diyas in this set are left in natural terracotta, with no paint or glaze, and each is shaped as a teardrop that narrows to a point where the wick lies.
A curled scroll rises from the centre of the bowl and wraps around a base of lotus petals, with fine stippled texture between the lines. The outer edge is worked into a rope-like twist that follows the whole outline of the lamp. The teardrop form resembles the paisley motif, which is known in India as the mango or kairi design and appears across textiles, jewellery, and temple carving. Here it is raised in clay, so it can be felt as well as seen.
Without paint, the pattern relies on shadow. In daylight the relief reads as a quiet, tone-on-tone surface, and once the wick is lit, the flame throws moving shadows across the scroll and petals. The clay keeps its warm burnt-orange colour and slightly grainy matte finish. With use, oil and soot darken the bowl, and many people prefer that lived-in look to a new lamp.
All four diyas match in shape and design, which makes them easy to place in pairs along a step or in the corners of a rangoli, the floor pattern of flower petals or coloured powder that families lay out for Diwali. Because the surface is bare terracotta, soak each lamp in water for at least 30 minutes before the first use so the clay absorbs less oil. Beyond the festival, the set suits daily prayer, housewarming gifts, and table decoration.
Made by Rajasthan artisans and finished by hand, the diyas differ slightly in edge, rope-twist border, and the exact curl of the scroll from one lamp to the next. Because no paint covers the surface, the colour you see is the colour of the fired clay, and it may vary a little from set to set.
