Terracotta Diya Set of 6 — Handmade Natural Clay Diyas with Embossed Lotus & Leaf Design
Details
These four terracotta diyas are round, shallow bowls with a ribbed rim and a leaf-shaped lip at one side where the cotton wick rests. A diya holds oil or ghee (clarified butter) and is lit in Indian homes during daily prayer and in large numbers at Diwali, the autumn festival of lights. The set is left in natural terracotta, without paint or glaze.
Inside each bowl, eight lotus petals radiate from a small star-shaped centre, and every petal carries a fine feathered line like the vein of a leaf. Small triangular marks sit in the gaps between the petals, and a band of upright ribs runs around the rim. The wick lip is shaped like a single leaf with a central vein, so the whole lamp reads as a lotus resting on a leaf. The pattern is raised in the clay, so it shows in daylight and picks up shadow when the lamp is lit.
The lotus appears in the art and belief of many cultures, including India, Egypt, and East Asia, usually as a sign of purity because it opens clean above muddy water. In India it is also linked with Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, who is welcomed into homes at Diwali. A lotus lamp carries that association without needing colour, and the plain clay tone suits both traditional settings and modern interiors.
The bowl is wide and shallow, so the flame sits close to the rim and the relief stays in view while the lamp burns. Soak the diyas in water for at least 30 minutes before the first use so the clay absorbs less oil. Four matched lamps fit neatly around a puja shelf, the home altar area used for daily prayer, or at the edges of a rangoli, the floor pattern of flower petals or coloured powder laid out for the festival.
Made by Rajasthan artisans and finished by hand, the diyas in a set match closely but not exactly, with small differences in rim ribbing and petal depth. The tone of the fired clay can shift slightly between sets, since no paint or glaze covers it, and that variation is part of working in natural material.
