Long before refrigeration, filtration systems, or plastic bottles existed, the matka was already doing the job — a clay water pot keeping households across India supplied with cool, mineral-rich water using nothing but the physical properties of fired clay. This piece updates that centuries-old vessel just enough for contemporary use: a built-in tap for clean, easy dispensing, wrapped in bold hand-painted floral work that turns a purely functional object into something worth displaying.

The pot is wheel-thrown from natural clay, kiln-fired, then coated in a food-safe white slip that becomes the canvas for hand-painted patterns in the reds, yellows, and blues characteristic of Rajasthani folk art — sweeping florals, zigzag borders, confident stripes. None of it is stencilled or printed; every pot goes through an artisan’s hands individually.

Underneath the decoration, the pot does exactly what clay vessels have always done — the porous walls cool stored water through gentle evaporation with zero energy input, gradually shift the water’s pH toward alkaline, and let trace minerals from the clay enrich every glass poured. The tap at the base makes dispensing genuinely mess-free compared to tipping a traditional matka, and a removable lid keeps the water covered between uses.

At roughly 3–4 litres, this suits a family kitchen table, a shared office water station, or a yoga studio — anywhere a group of people want accessible, naturally cooled water without introducing more plastic into the room. Season it with a 24-hour water soak before first use, and it’s ready to become the water source guests actually comment on.
