Details

These four diyas, which are small clay oil lamps lit during Diwali, the autumn festival of lights, are shaped like multi-pointed star flowers, with a scalloped rim that opens into a shallow bowl. Two are painted deep green and two deep red, each with a glossy finish that reflects the flame. A fine white line traces the outline of every point, and a small gold dot marks the tip.

Inside the bowl the pattern repeats in a smaller star, drawn in thin yellow lines with rows of tiny yellow dots between the points, so the whole surface reads as layered rings of ornament. The wick rests in the centre of the bowl, which means the flame sits in the middle of the star and lights the pattern from within instead of from one side. Because each one is painted by hand, the dots, lines, and gold tips vary slightly between the four.

Red and green are among the colours most often used in Indian festive decoration, and together they give this set strong contrast against the marigold yellow of a flower rangoli, the traditional floor pattern made from petals or coloured powder at Diwali. Placed in a square, the four diyas line up as pairs, red across from red and green across from green. They also suit a side table or a puja shelf, the home altar area used for daily prayer, since the glossy surface picks up candlelight well.

A cotton wick and a little oil or ghee is all they need to light. Because the finish is glossy, the colour looks deeper in candlelight than in daylight, and the gold tips pick up the flame. Place them on a heat-resistant surface and let them cool fully before moving or wiping them. The set suits Diwali gifting and year-round decor for anyone who likes painted pottery, with four pieces in two colours matched for a balanced arrangement.

Each diya is shaped and painted by Rajasthan artisans individually, so the exact tone of the red and green and the placement of the fine detail differ slightly across the set.

Care Instructions

  • Lighting — Light with a cotton wick and oil or ghee. Place on a flat, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains, paper, and dry flowers.
  • Supervision — Never leave a lit diya unattended. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Cleaning — Let the diya cool completely. Wipe off oil and soot with a soft dry cloth. Do not scrub, as scrubbing can lift the painted decoration.
  • Avoid — Do not soak or put in a dishwasher · Do not use chemical cleaners · Do not drop or stack while hot.

Tip — The glossy finish shows fingerprints and oil. A soft dry cloth brings the shine back once the diya has cooled.
