Details
The prabhavali — that arched frame behind a deity figure — is one of those design elements so embedded in South Indian temple art that most people stop consciously noticing it. This statue brings it back into focus: Lakshmi seated in classical four-armed form, set against a hand-carved arch dense with scrollwork and floral relief that took nearly as long to shape as the goddess herself.
Look closer and the detail earns the attention. A lotus throne, individually formed jewellery pieces, a lotus held in two hands while the other two rest in gestures of blessing — everything pressed and shaped by hand rather than cast from a mould. The face carries painted eyes and a composed expression, and the crown follows the same visual conventions found in centuries-old South Indian bronze and stone Lakshmi figures.
Diwali is naturally when this piece sees the most demand — bringing a new Lakshmi murti into the house during her own festival makes intuitive sense. But prosperity doesn’t really run on a calendar, and most households that own one keep her on a permanent shelf year-round rather than packing her away after the season ends. The prabhavali also makes the piece easier to place well — the arch gives it a clear front-facing orientation, which helps when you’re deciding exactly where on a shelf or altar table the statue should sit relative to other objects around it. Compared to the elephant-mounted Gajlakshmi version in our collection, this piece sits lower and more compact, which suits a smaller altar or a shared shelf where space is already accounted for by other devotional pieces.
