Details

The cow sits low, horns tilted upward, a string of carved bells and beads looped across her back the way you'd see on cattle dressed up for a village fair. Where her hump would be, the potter has left an opening instead — deep enough to hold a small plant, so the two sit together as one piece rather than a figure with a pot glued on afterward.

No mould is involved in making her. A potter in Udaipur builds the body from a single mass of clay, working the legs, the curve of the back, and the face by hand before going in with a tool to press the bead pattern around her neck and flank. She's left to dry slowly in open air, then fired at a high enough temperature to hold her shape for years.

The cow holds a particular kind of regard in Indian households — gentleness, nourishment, the quiet work of giving without asking much back — and this piece leans into that without overstating it. Terracotta's porous walls let moisture pass through gradually, so plants that prefer to dry out between waterings tend to do well here.

Being unglazed, natural clay, there's nothing synthetic between the plant's roots and the pot holding them — no chemical coating, no plastic liner, nothing that eventually flakes or leaches.

  • Material — Natural terracotta clay, hand-built, kiln-fired
  • Origin — Handcrafted by artisan potters in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India
  • Motif — Hand-carved bead-and-bell harness with horned detailing
  • Best for — Succulents, indoor plants, console & entryway styling, gifting

A quiet, horned companion for whatever you choose to grow in it.

Size + Care

Size & Dimensions

  • Height — 31 cm
  • Width — 23 cm
  • Length — 28 cm

Note — Being entirely hand-built, no two cow planters are identical; slight differences in horn angle or bead spacing are marks of genuine handcraft, not a defect.

Care Instructions

  • Cleaning — Wipe with a dry or lightly damp cloth — skip harsh detergents, which clog the clay's natural pores
  • Watering — Best suited to plants that prefer soil to dry out between waterings, since terracotta wicks moisture through its walls
  • Placement — Suited to indoor spaces and covered outdoor corners — sustained direct rain will weather the surface faster
  • Avoid — Extended freezing temperatures, which can crack unglazed clay if moisture is trapped inside
  • Handling — Lift from the base rather than the horns or ears, which are the most delicate points
