terracotta-wall-clock-indus-script-border-11-inch-handcrafted-clay
Terracotta Wall Clock — Handcrafted Clay Clock with Ancient Indus Script Border

Most decorative clocks pick a theme and print it on. This one carves its theme in — a wide, flat square clay face bordered on all four sides by hand-carved symbols pulled from the script of the Indus Valley Civilisation, a writing system that’s stayed undeciphered through more than a century of serious scholarly effort. It’s the rare design element that’s simultaneously archaeological and completely at home as a modern wall statement.

The clay itself runs lighter and more honey-toned than the orange-leaning terracotta used elsewhere in the collection, chosen specifically because it sits closer to the actual colour of the ancient seals and artefacts the border design references. Inside that carved border, the clock face stays completely bare — no numerals, no printed marks, nothing but two hands moving across open clay. That contrast is doing real compositional work: a densely carved, historically loaded border wrapped around a calm, empty centre.

Every symbol along the border is cut by hand before firing, which means the exact spacing and depth shifts slightly across the four sides — evidence that a person carved this rather than a machine stamping out a template. Fitted with a standard silent-sweep quartz movement, so there’s no audible ticking to compete with the visual quiet of the design.

Genuinely suited to anyone with an actual interest in Indian history or ancient scripts rather than someone shopping for a generic clock — this is a piece that rewards knowing what it’s referencing, though it holds up visually even without that context.

Material — Natural unprocessed clay, hand-formed and hand-carved

Border — Hand-carved Indus Valley script symbols, all four sides

Movement — Silent quartz, battery-run (1 AA)

Face style — Completely bare — no numerals

Good for — Studies, living rooms, history-minded interiors, gifting

A border written in a language nobody alive can read, wrapped around time itself.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0929/2968/7799/files/pomelli_photoshoot-2_361abe43-629c-41e2-9982-16ffa60d8298.jpg?v=1777208005
https://www.soulofsoil.art/en-ca/products/terracotta-wall-clock-indus-script-border-11-inch-handcrafted-clay
